Introduction: The Constitution, Ignored?
Since the writing of the Constitution in 1787, all citizens of the United States were given "certain unalienable rights." However, some minority groups were not treated as fairly as others and were not given the all the same rights. This chapter will be focusing on a minority group that is not so small, but whose rights were very limited before the 21st century. There are about 48.9 million of them in the United States alone. They are people with disabilities. In the rest of the chapter, you will learn about the unfair treatment of this minority group, the beginning of the Disability Movement, their struggles, the great leaders that led the movement, and finally, its astonishing accomplishments.
